The Activities

Overview

Söderarm is an old lighthouse and pilot lookout, with houses dating back to the 1800’s. (see more under history). The buildings that we use in our establishment are, three former residential houses, one former watch house with overnight facilities, two former military barracks and various outhouses.

The military has used this place since World War II and they still have two barracks left on the island plus large underground facilities which are now closed.

Today Söderarm AB utilizes all civilian buildings (owned by the Swedish maritime administration), the building formerly used as military eating barracks (today named Markan: used as a modern conference premises) and the former military sleeping barracks (today called Luckan: pleasantly set up).

The island itself goes under the name of Torskär. It is approximately 430 meters from north-south and 240 meters from east-west. The island, located in the outer archipelago has a barren nature mainly made of cliffs and rocks.

We have chosen to keep the interior design that was there when we arrived in 1999 which is from the 50-60s, the last time the place was renovated. We have furnished the houses like the residential homes they once were. This gives the guests a genuine feeling of being at home, far away from the normal conference environment.

2000 was our first actual year of operation and we set a goal of 500 guests per year. Over the last few years we have reached 600! On top of that we also cater for 200 day visitors per year. We still have room to expand, especially during winter as we’re open all year around, an unusual thing in the archipelago.

Our environment is unique and combines the feeling of adventure with relaxation. Every group gets our full attention as we only accept one group at the time. No group is too small but we can not accept groups with more than 24 participants at any one time, in order to cater for dinner in the lookout tower and overnight stays.

Over the years we have catered for a number of different companies and organizations who seek an unusual environment for their conference.

Last but not least – Our food! When reading our guestbook you will find testimonials from guests who in every possible way describes our fantastic food; home made, lovely presentation, very tasty and filling. Of course our menu offers a lot of fish, if possible from local waters but we also offer dishes such as deer and moose. We always send our guests a copy of the menu prior to arrival.

Nature

Torskär sits 10.5 meters above sea level, unusually high for the outer archipelago. Of course it's barren, with cliffs and rocks.

There are two spruces planted on the island by someone a long time ago but apart from that there are only small bushes which make the island susceptible to wind.

During spring and summer the variety in flora is extraordinary, shifting in numerous colours but in late summer the nature looks slightly tanned due to the many hours of sun (the most in the country according to a meteorologist on TV4).
Winter shows a huge contrast to summer. During these months we experience shifting colours in grey, blue and other dull shades. The most beautiful thing is a winter day with a little snow on the ground, sunshine and a blue sky. It sparkles! During winter nights the starry sky is enormous especially during full moon. We even get to see the Northern Lights from time to time.

Our birdlife is rich during spring and summer. Many kinds of migratory birds stop over on the island on their way north. From the end of May-July you can see a lot of nesting birds. We get the Silver Tern, rare yet annoying as it likes to “attack” us humans. Apart from the Silver Tern, other nesting birds are Seagulls, Redshanks, Ruddy Turnstones, House and Barn Swallows, Eiders, Golden eyes and many more. We also get large and majestic Eagles flying in over the island all year around.

On Söderarm the most you hear is nature.
